Small and Medium‐sized Enterprises (SMEs) are recognised as the backbone of the European economy. This objective of this project was to map and analyse the territorial patterns and performance of SMEs in Europe, and to propose territorial development strategies that can be considered in different regions and cities to further strengthen the development and sustainability of SMEs. OIR was lead partner in a consortium using different methods, from literature review, data collection, data analysis to mapping, case studies including focus groups and FOG‐tests as well as two workshops identified several types of regions. As a result recommendations and developed recommendations for them and the EU as well as national governments.
