Citizen energy communities contributing to the energy transition have been strengthened with the adoption of the new Renewable Energy Directive and Electricity directive. Even though both directives allow for the implementation of cross-border Citizen Energy Communities, not a single one is implemented to this date in the EU. In the context of the b-solutions 2.0 initiative, Roland Gaugitsch, Bernd Schuh and Reinhard Pichler analysed legal obstacles and potential solutions for this in the Bavarian-Austrian border region. The results were discussed in a workshop with mayors and members of the municipal administration of the region.
