On November 20th 2013 OIR conducted a workshop on ‘Potentials and Challenges of Styria in the European Context‘ at the premises of the Department for federal planning and regional development Styria.

In the first part of the event Erich Dallhammer and Jiannis Kaucic presented maps of the ESPON Atlas publication showing the territorial dimension of the Europe-2020-Strategy. Following this, 25 regional stakeholders discussed the potentials and challenges of Styria in the European context and the usefulness of analyses of the ESPON programme in supporting regional policy makers in developing and implementing policies and strategies. The discussion involved quality, comparability and availability of trans-regional data and analyses as well as the need for more interaction between ESPON, the national and the regional level.

In the second part OIR presented examples of approaches and methods for detecting territorial potentials and challenges coming from ESPON projects as well as the structure of the draft ESPON DeTeC handbook. This handbook is being developed in the context of the project ESPON DeTeC and shall generate recommendations to support regional practitioners and policy makers by providing ESPON approaches, methods, analyses and illustrative examples.

The workshop in Graz is one of six regional laboratories of the ESPON DeTeC project. The knowledge gained in the discussions with the participants of the workshop will contribute to the development of the handbook, which will be finished in March 2014.
