How are the European regions being impacted by the current energy and gas supply situation?

The ÖIR Team –Kinga Hat, Marvin Böhnke, Erich Dallhammer, Roland Gaugitsch, Helene Gorny, Chien-Hui Hsiung and Isabella Messinger – together with t33 Srl will explore this current topic for the European Parliament. During a newly contracted research project we will focus on the influence of the energy supply crisis on the EU goals and development strategies, especially the Just Transition Plans. EU-wide findings will be explored in depth in 6 representative case studies: Lapland (FI), Uckermark (DE), Silesia (PL), Galaţi (RO) and Sulcis Iglesiente (IT).

Following questions will be explored:

  • Are the plans for transformation to climate neutrality still feasible?
  • What has changed as a result of the new recognition of the necessity of independence from Russian energy supply and trade linkages with Russia?
  • Is there a need for special support to these regions to help them follow their energy transition goals also in this challenging situation?
