European border regions represent specific areas where administrative units often do not correspond to the actual functional relationships between towns and municipalities across borders. The CROSSGOV project developed a novel, data-based method for delineating border regions based on such functional relationships and exa¬mined existing politi¬cal governance me¬chanisms to assess their suitability for such areas.
Within the project, the ÖIR coordinated the collection and processing of data, as well as the creation of a pan-European atlas to visualise functional border regions. In addition, the project team examined the Gmünd-České Vele¬nice border region as a functional integra¬tion area in a case study.
