The next expansion phase of Vienna’s underground network envisages to build a new underground line U5 and to extend the existing line U2. Based on the results of the Working Group on the development of public transport services (City of Vienna, Municipal Dept. 18, 2013), different variants have to be analysed from a professional perspective and ranked in the context of an evaluation process.

Key element of the ÖIR study was the analysis of variants. It allowed a ranking of ten different variants according to their cost and transport efficiency. These results were used as an input for the review process of the Municipal Department 18 and led to the final decision on the further expansion of Vienna’s underground network: The extension of the U2 in a first construction phase until Matzleinsdorfer Platz and extension to Wienerberg in a further project phase. The construction of the U5 in a first stage until Frankhplatz and in a further step via Michelbeuern-AKH to Elterleinplatz.
