Cross-border workers are an integral part of the European Union – however to this day, we only have a very limited picture on how many people are actually commuting across a national border for work. In our ongoing project in cooperation with Statistics Netherlands on behalf of DG REGIO of the European Commission, we are working to develop an integrated European methodology to collecting data on cross-border workers and improve our perspective in this regard.

In an intensive workshop mid September we brought together statistical authorities’ representatives of 22 countries to discuss methodological and practical questions of the potential production of experimental statistics on this matter. Sabrina Mansutti and Roland Gaugitsch from ÖIR together with Johan van der Valk from Statistics Netherlands led through the workshop.
