At the workshop “Space matters – the territorial dimension of EUSALP” during the EUSALP Annual Forum in Innsbruck, Erich Dallhammer presented key findings from the EUSALP State-of-the-Territory Report. He highlighted how the results of the territorial analyses connect with the emerging Alpine Spatial Development Perspective, currently being developed by the #AlpineConvention. The workshop – moderated by Wolfgang Pfefferkorn – focused on the added value of a territorial approach in the Alpine Region and that of an Alpine Spatial Development Perspective.

Main take-aways of the discussion:

• An Alpine spatial development perspective can provide valuable insights for the EUSALP Action Groups.

• Analytical maps could help build a shared understanding of Alpine challenges (e.g. transnational ecological corridors).

• Common criteria and definitions can support coordinated action on shared issues (e.g. criteria for the development of wind and solar power plants, standards for transnational and regional ecological corridors).

• Cooperation between the Alpine Convention (developing the Alpine Spatial Development Perspective) and EUSALP stakeholders will create added value.

• Even without being legally binding, endorsement by a transnational body strengthens its relevance.

• Implementation ultimately depends on regions and municipalities.

• Mechanisms to implement an Alpine Spatial Development Perspective at the different levels will be relevant.

The EUSALP State-of-the-Territory-Report was commissioned by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Climate and Environmental Protection, Regions and Water Management and written by Erich Dallhammer and Cristian Andronic from ÖIR as well as Helmut Hiess, Wolfgang Pfefferkorn and Elisabeth Stix from Rosinak & Partner.
