OIR (team leader Bernd Schuh – consortium consisting of BBR, Spatial Foresight, PÖYRY, Univ. of Life Science Vienna) has completed the contract study Regional Challenges in the Perspective of 2020: Deepening and Broadening the Analysis. The study has been commissioned by the General Directorate for Regional Policy and analyses the vulnerability of EU regions vis-à-vis the global mega trends of globalization, climate change, demographic change, sustainable energy and social disparities. The study will serve the future Cohesion Policy as guidance for the allocation of funds as well as support instrument for the establishment of a “place based” EU policy. At the same time it analyses the territorial effects of single challenges but also the effects of multiple challenges and of the recent economic crisis on the regional scale. With this respect the study will also allow EU Member States to elaborate their Partnership Agreements with the Commission by combining the national/ regional sector policies to combat the challenges. The results of the study are available as downloads. Moreover OIR has developed an interactive mapping tool showing the study results on the regional scale, which is available online.
