On 25 February, Arndt Münch had the honour of presenting the study “Improving Essential Services in EU Regions: The Role of Cohesion Policy” to the Members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Regional Development (REGI), followed by a lively and engaging exchange on the future of EU support to disadvantaged regions.

Commissioned by the European Parliament, the study examined how Cohesion Policy funds can help mitigate the effects of depopulation in vulnerable regions by strengthening the availability, accessibility and quality of essential services such as healthcare, childcare and other services to people. It highlights the barriers many remote and rural areas face in maintaining service provision and sets out recommendations to enhance the long-term attractiveness and resilience of Europe’s regions.
