Recognizing the role of Small and Medium‐sized Enterprises (SMEs) as the backbone of European economy, the ESPON programme has launched a project aiming at better understanding and supporting of SMEs. The OIR-led consortium has now finalized its work. The final study provides mapping and analysis of the territorial patterns and performance of SMEs in Europe as well as proposes territorial development strategies for regions and cities to further strengthen the development and sustainability of SMEs.
