Understanding how people live and work across national borders remains a challenge, especially when it comes to accessing reliable data on cross-border workers. Yet, these flows are vital to the functioning of the EU’s internal market, regional cohesion, and labour market integration. Building on the progress made at the first workshop held in September, the second workshop on cross-border data collection brought together national and regional statistical authorities representing 22 countries.
The workshop, which took place on 17–18 November 2025 in Brussels, focused specifically on knowledge-sharing between countries at different stages of readiness. Participants explored the availability of administrative data, opportunities for methodological alignment, and potential solutions to technical and institutional barriers. The agenda included dedicated sessions on data ownership structures, coordination across national authorities, and challenges in accessing and linking administrative sources.
Sabrina Mansutti from ÖIR together with Johan van der Valk (Statistics Netherlands) led through the workshop. The event marked an important step towards collecting data from the 27 countries covered by the project and developing a feasible, scalable methodology for the systematic collection of data on cross-border workers.
