Borders within Europe create unique challenges for the regions surrounding them, impacting governance, mobility and data collection. Monitoring these areas effectively requires overcoming numerous obstacles – from national statistical data “ending” at the border and inconsistent datasets between national statistical offices, to limited cooperation between authorities on either side. The ‚European Cross-Border Monitoring Network‘ brings together statisticians, policymakers and data users to address these issues collaboratively.
In 2025, the Network, led by BBSR, marks its seventh year of activity. The annual meeting, held on 30-31 January 2025 in Brussels, was hosted by Statistics Flanders and organized by BBSR. Over two days, network members presented key projects and data, exchanged perspectives and explored synergies between ongoing initiatives. The event provided a valuable occasion to exchange perspectives, explore synergies between ongoing projects and discuss the challenges and opportunities.
At the meeting, Roland Gaugitsch and Sabrina Mansutti presented our ongoing work for DG REGIO studies on Regional cross-border labour market analysis and Cross-border commuters as well as the ESPON CROSSGOV project.
