Based on the experience from the two first macro-regional strategies and the new Cohesion Policy regulations for the 2014-2020 programming period, OIR has analyzed – together with its partners Delft University of Technology, Spatial Foresight and t33 – the future role of macro-regions in the implementation of the European Territorial Cooperation (ETC).
On the basis of a literature review and case studies, the study offers an assessment of potential benefits in the development of new macro-regional strategies as well as the most common risks and difficulties in their implementation. Recommendations are derived to inform the position of the European Parliament on how it can efficiently support the creation and implementation of new macro-regional strategies. The study has been published and can be downloaded from the European Parliament website.
