Since European countries have different planning systems, but there is no general overview that facilitates comparison so far, the Academy for Territorial Development in the Leibniz Association (ARL) has compiled country profiles on its website. They include basic information on geography and the socio-economic and political situation, and shed light on the administrative structure and governance system at the various planning levels – federal government, federal states, districts, cities and municipalities.

The profiles answer questions on the planning system, including framework legislation, relevant actors and stakeholders as well as planning instruments at different levels. The country profiles are supplemented with illustrative examples, maps, illustrations and links to relevant websites. Wolfgang Neugebauer and Ulrike Stroissnig from ÖIR have prepared the country profile for Austria. This country profile and profiles of other European countries are available on the ARL website.
