Over the past year, we have worked intensively on the ESPON project “Making Space for the Renewable Energy Transition (MAK-RES)”. The now published final report is available online and provides practical insights into how spatial planning can effectively support the expansion of renewable energy — especially wind and solar energy — across Europe.
The project focused on key territorial challenges of the energy transition: land-use conflicts, social acceptance, administrative barriers, and the question of how renewable energy can be better integrated into existing planning and governance systems.
Under the lead of ÖIR, case studies were carried out in seven countries together with IDEA Consult, local experts, and national and regional stakeholders: Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Portugal, Romania, and Spain. The results show that the expansion of renewable energy is not only a technical or economic task, but above all a spatial one.
