We are pleased to inform that the ESPON project “Making Space for the Renewable Energy Transition (MAK-RES)” has officially been launched. The project held its kick-off meeting with the ESPON EGTC and project partners, setting the course for an ambitious programme of work over the coming months.
MAK-RES explores how spatial planning can support the deployment of renewable energy—particularly wind and solar—across Europe, addressing the key challenges of land-use conflicts, public acceptance and administrative barriers. The project will conduct in-depth case studies in seven countries: Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Portugal, Romania, and Spain.
The MAK-RES team, led by ÖIR in cooperation with IDEA Consult and local experts, will work closely with national and regional stakeholders to identify planning challenges, map enabling practices, and develop recommendations that contribute to EU policy objectives—particularly those under the European Green Deal and the revised Renewable Energy Directive (RED III).
