From 17 to 19 June 2015 the ökosan‘15 – an international conference for high-quality renovation with timber construction systems and densification – took place in Graz. The presentations gave an overview of the latest developments in the field of energy-optimized renovation of existing buildings and densification of urban areas. In his presentation Growing cities – densification as a key strategy of urban development‘, Christof Schremmer from OIR presented and discussed the findings of the EU project SUME ‚Sustainable Urban Metabolism for Europe‘. Researchers from eight European countries worked for three years at concepts to make cities ‚sustainable‘ (www.sume.at). It became clear that a modest urban densification is the key to more efficient structures of urban areas. A project description of SUME project is available at the OIR-website. The presentations of the event can be downloaded here.
